What To Do Until We Arrive When There Are Water Leaks by Paul Padilla, Operations Manager

Leaking Pipe Water Damage Leaking Pipe Water Damage

We regularly get asked what a home owner should do when they experience water damage in their home or office and what steps they can take to eliminate further damages until SERVPRO of Diamond Bar/South Pomona arrives. Here are 5 important tips on what you should do as soon as you hear, feel or see water coming into your home or place of business.

1. Stop the water: When a water leak occurs the first priority is to immediately stop the water or shut off the supply of water as best you can. Whether the leak is from a copper pipe, plastic Pex line or a supply line, it needs to be shut off ASAP. If a supply line burst, it can be as easy as shutting the Angle Stop Valve off to stop the water from going past the valve. If it is a copper or plastic main line then the entire system will need to be shut off at the Main Water Shut Off Valve until the leak can be isolated and/or repaired. An example of that would be when a plumber caps off the leaking section of pipe to allow the rest of the plumbing to function as normal until the full repair can be made.

2. Stay Safe: Make sure all electrical devices and power bars are elevated out of the water. Turn off power if needed to then move electrical devices out of water. Electrical can be turned back on once the area is considered safe.

3. Use barriers to stop the water: Stop the flow of the water with towels or sand bags if possible. Stopping the migration of the water will help stop the water from traveling into rooms that would otherwise be unaffected. This will reduce the damage and cost.

4. Protect furniture and objects: Get contents and furniture out water and off floor. Remove boxes and loose items from floor that can be damaged by water. Put aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs to eliminate damage to furniture.

5. Remove water: Remove excess water with wet shop vacuum where and when possible. Removing the standing  water will cut down on the time the water will have to absorb into the building materials.

How To React to a Gas Leak

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

Realistic images Show gas pipes are leaking. Vector realistic file. A gas leak can quickly turn into a gas fire or explosion.

While gas delivery systems are very safe, the pipes can still deteriorate and leak with age. A gas leak can quickly turn into a gas fire or explosion. These can quickly burn through your home and cause a lot of damage. If you want to avoid this unpleasant situation, you need to know the signs of a leak and what to do in this emergency.

What To Do if You Smell Gas

The best way to avoid a gas fire is to react quickly to a leak. Typically, you will identify a leak by smelling sulfur or rotten eggs. If you smell gas, you need to do the following:

  • Leave the area and get to safety
  • Call the utility provider and let them know about the leak
  • Call 911 to notify fire officials
  • Help others evacuate and stay clear of the area until it is proven safe
  • Call a fire remediation company to help remove the smell and any potential damage from your home in Cal Poly University-Pomona, CA.

Other Ways To Identify Gas
Most people identify natural gas by its smell. While the gas itself is odorless, a sulfur-based odorant is added to give it the associated rotten egg smell so it can easily be identified. However, this is not the only way to identify this substance. If you are outdoors, you can often see it. Any gas escaping from an underground pipeline will be recognizable by the discolored soil and dead vegetation around the line. You can also identify a potential gas fire threat in your home by listening. If you hear a high-pitched whistle or hissing noise, there is a chance that this is caused by escaping gas from your pipes.
If you want to avoid a gas explosion or fire, you must react appropriately. Knowing the signs of a leak and what to do in this event can help you avoid devastation.

How To Remove Mold From Paintings

How To Remove Mold From Art Work

Mold cleaning is typically reserved for large projects such as building infrastructure and furniture rehab, complicated endeavors which are best handled by residential mold remediation services. When it comes to personal items such as paintings, the task can often be handled independently. Here's how to remove mold from your favorite works of art hanging in Cal Poly University-Pomona, CA.

1. Know Your Painting
The materials that constitute your painting determine how it should be treated. Oils are highly durable, although they sometimes react badly to chemicals. Acrylics can be damaged when they get wet. Watercolors are among the trickiest to clean because of their water-soluble nature.

2. Clean Your Frame
Remove the frame to reduce moisture and slow further mold damage. Create a mold cleaning solution by mixing bleach with water or use another appropriate household option. Before scrubbing away, apply your cleaner conservatively to see if it removes the finish.

3. Clean Your Painting
Learn as much as you can about mold remediation, as mistakes can ruin works of art forever. Lightly mist the back of the painting with rubbing alcohol or Lysol to stop further fungal growth. Treating the front is more painstaking. Small groupings of mold can be gotten rid of by applying a cotton swab dampened with alcohol and water. Work slowly and stop if you notice your efforts harming the image. A light bristled brush is ideal for getting rid of dried mold. Have a HEPA-filtered vacuum by your side to immediately eliminate floating mold particles.

4. Dry Your Painting
Place your artwork in sunlight until it's completely dried. Set paintings outside if possible, where breezes can contribute to moisture removal. Exercise caution if there is the potential for rain. Whether inside or outside, place your art on a flat surface such as a towel or board.
After completing the de-molding process, your painting is ready to be rehung. With some well-informed mold cleaning techniques, your most precious artwork can be saved.

How To Minimize Your Business's Water Consumption

How To Minimize Your Business's Water Consumption

Overconsumption is one of the most common water issues facing businesses today. In addition to being better for the environment, minimizing water usage can also benefit your company’s bottom line. If your Pomona, CA, business has been using a lot of water, it may be time to consider making adjustments to decrease water consumption.

Upgrades
If you have an older building or one that hasn’t been updated in a while, upgrading the equipment that uses water can greatly decrease the amount of water used by your facility. Efficiency generally increases with advancements in technology, so make sure the following equipment in your building is up to date:

  • Irrigation systems
  • Dishwashers
  • Faucets
  • Toilets and urinals

Another simple water upgrade is insulating the pipes. Pipes that are fully insulated can deliver hot water more quickly than uninsulated pipes, so you won’t have to run as much water waiting for it to heat up.

Routine Maintenance
Keeping your equipment properly maintained can decrease consumption and prevent other water issues. If your business has an irrigation system, it is important to regularly check that sprinkler heads are facing the right direction so that they are watering the lawn and plants rather than the parking lot. Adjust the sprinkler schedule as needed to account for changing weather patterns.
In addition to maintaining the sprinkler system, address leaks as soon as you notice them. Compared to large leaks that cause immediate water damage and may even require professional water restoration, small leaks may seem like no big deal. However, they can waste large amounts of water over time.
Some businesses, such as laundromats and restaurants, use a lot of water, and others use comparatively little. All businesses, however, can work to minimize water consumption by keeping their facilities up to date and well-maintained. As an added bonus, doing so decreases the risk of other water issues, such as an overwatered lawn.

4 Common Places To Find Mold in a Commercial Building

Common Places To Find Mold Damage In A Commercial Property

Do you have a mold infestation in your Diamond Bar, CA, commercial building? Mold is a sneaky little organism. A few tiny spores can quickly turn into full-on mold growth, followed by the development of a massive infestation. You may not even know it exists until you discover that it's taken over part of your building. Here are some common places to find mold damage in a commercial property.

1. Carpet
Mold spores are practically everywhere, inside and out. It's easy for your shoes or clothes to carry in spores from the outdoors, where they'll ultimately end up on the carpet. Soaked carpet, such as after a flood, probably needs to be replaced. The water can also soak through the padding and even the subfloor. It's impossible to completely dry carpeting, and especially padding before mold begins growing. These materials, once damp, become a perfect place for mold to set up a house.

2. Ceiling Tiles
Ceiling tiles in areas with high humidity or water damage can result in mold growth. Mold can result from a leaky roof or leaky pipes, especially because ceiling tiles typically don't have any ventilation. Unless you see the damage, it could be quite a while before you know there's a problem.

3. Ductwork
Condensation can result when ductwork isn't operating correctly. The dark, wet conditions make it an excellent place for mold to grow and spread. As well, air blows through the ductwork, potentially spreading spores throughout the building. When this happens, it's likely that mold remediation professionals will be required to get it under control.

4. Drywall
Water-damaged drywall is very susceptible to mold because it's porous. Sometimes the mold grows on the back of the drywall, so you won't even know it's there until there's a substantial problem.
Discovering mold growth in your building can be overwhelming. Mold cleanup must be completed as soon as possible for the well-being of your employees and your business.

How to Prevent Damage Caused By Severe Winter Weather

A winter storm in Diamond Bar, CA, can result in a lot of damage to your commercial building. Luckily, there are some things you can do to prepare for this. The following may help you minimize the effect of severe weather on your business.

1. Make Repairs to Damaged Areas
Storm damage can be more serious if your building is already damaged. Some things to look out for are cracks in the walls, deteriorating seals around doors and windows and loose tiles on the roof. An emergency restoration company can repair areas that need work.

2. Keep the Building Warm
With a winter storm comes cold temperatures. A pipe break is more likely to occur if the plumbing becomes too cold and freezes. Insulating any exposed pipes as well as keeping the heat on in the building can reduce the chances of this.

3. Move Important Items to Higher Floors
Whether it’s from a storm or a broken pipe, flooding can severely damage your building as well as the items inside. Relocating items to a higher level can prevent them from becoming damaged. It is a good idea to do this for paper documents as well as electronic devices and equipment. You may want to move some of your smaller furniture items as well.

4. Don’t Neglect Items Outside of the Building
When preparing for a storm, remember to check the outside too. Furniture or other outdoor items could be picked up by strong winds and may damage the building’s exterior or break the windows. Gutters should also be cleaned to prevent water from backing up and leaking into the walls or roof.

5. Stay Updated
When you are expecting bad weather, you should watch the news regularly to keep up with any changes. Depending on how it develops, you may need to adjust your plans.
Preparing your business for a winter storm can prevent damage or reduce the damage that does occur. Repairing any existing damage will make your building less vulnerable to the storm, and keeping up with the weather will help you determine what other measures should be taken.

Fire Insurance Coverage: 3 Questions to Ask Your Agent Today

Fire Insurance Coverage

A fire can be devastating for a business: Flames can sweep through a building and destroy years of hard work within a matter of seconds. Given that fire damage is among the most frequent types of damage to commercial property, it’s critical to ensure that your Pomona, CA, building has some sort of fire insurance in place. Fortunately, your commercial property insurance likely covers fire damage to your building. Verify that you’re protected by learning the answers to these questions before a fire breaks out.

1. Which Items Are Protected Against Loss?
Your commercial property insurance covers damage to your business building and, ordinarily, at least some additional items. Examples of these items could include

Exterior structures, such as signs, fences, and garages
Inventory and supplies
Manufacturing equipment
Electronics
Office furniture

Coverage for these items varies greatly among insurance companies, so check your policy to ensure your business’s critical property is adequately covered.

2. What Kinds of Fires Are Covered?
Even for items that are covered under your policy, property insurance only pays for damage that arises from covered events. Most commercial property policies cover damage caused by natural disasters, vandalism, explosions, and fire. It is worth noting, however, that most policies’ fire insurance provisions specifically exclude damage from fires caused by equipment or appliance malfunctions, as well as certain types of electrical fires.

3. Which Fire-Related Expenses Are Included?
The total cost necessary to completely recover after a fire almost always exceeds the amount paid by a commercial property insurance company. There are a vast number of different types of fire restoration expenses that could arise, not all of which are always covered by insurance. Some common examples of fire-related expenses include:

  • Smoke cleanup
  • Water damage caused by firefighting efforts
  • Odor remediation
  • Fire department fees
  • Data recovery

While most commercial property policies will include some level of fire insurance, every policy is different. Review your policy documents or contact your agent to learn more about your coverage.

Look for Mold in These Unlikely Places at Home

3/30/2021 (Permalink)

mold in the corner of the window Mold growth can occur in small moist places.

Places Where You Might Find Mold

Mold growth generally occurs in small, moist places. As you try to locate it and call a mold remediation team to deal with the problem, you may think about the usual culprits like moldy drywall, shower curtains or the space under the sink. However, there are some locations that still develop mold that may not be first in your thoughts. Search these areas in your Diamond Bar, CA, home to stop further mold spread.

1. Filing Cabinets
While it is not abnormal to find mold on wood, it is less obvious to find this organism inside a filing cabinet. The paper documents you keep in storage are made of wood pulp, which is an ideal feeding material for mold. The possibility of growth in this area increases if there is high humidity or if there is water damage nearby. Use a dehumidifier and increase air circulation in these areas.

2. Window Sills
Other places where you can check for mold growth include the window sills. These locations may be low priority when it comes to inspection and cleaning, but they contain the right ingredients for mold to thrive. Condensation often gathers around them, especially when they are only aired out during the late spring and summer. The accumulated dirt also provides attractive food. Open your windows regularly and clean them to prevent mold from growing inside of them.

3. Chimneys
Chimneys are often associated with fire and dryness, so they initially seem like an unlikely place for mold. That being said, the presence of wood, dead leaves and other organic materials that enter because of poor top covering creates food for mold. Add to that the porous composition of bricks and the leftover water from snow and rain to create the perfect development location.
Mold growth can occur in many places, from the expected spots like behind wallpaper and under flooring to lesser-known areas like window sills and chimneys. Consider as many options as possible when locating this organism.

How Professional Avoid Cross Contamination of Mold in Commercial Facilities

Prevent Mold Contamination In Your Business

A mold cleanup can be a nerve-wracking thing for business owners. They often worry about cross-contamination and longer interruptions, even when trusting mold remediation companies in Cal Poly University-Pomona, CA, with the removal and restoration. For uncomfortable owners, knowing the five ways companies prevent mold contamination may be refreshing.

1. Physical Barriers
The problem with mold removal is the size of mold spores. Spores are microscopic, and any movement of a colony can cause hundreds or thousands of spores to float away on air currents. Professionals understand the risks of spread, which is why they use negative air chambers and pressure to keep the mold contained in one area. They may also wet down infested materials to limit spore movement during removal.

2. HVAC Shutdown
To further limit the spread of a colony, the remediation company you hire will probably instruct you to shut down the HVAC system. While such a move may make you uncomfortable, it is crucial to preventing further contamination of the facility.

3. Air Scrubbers
While the rooms and affected areas are sealed off, the mold cleanup crew still wants to limit the amount of mold movement. For severe infestations, the team will probably use air scrubbers, which are incredibly useful air filtration devices, capable of removing mold spores out of the air.

4. Antifungal and Antimicrobial Treatments
Mold remediation companies do not only use standard cleaning methods and treatments. Many professionals use a variety of antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to scrub materials and structural elements, killing the fungal colony that may remain.

5. Debris Removal and Contents Cleaning
Most porous items, especially those in direct contact with the colony, may need to be thrown away. However, for essential items and nonporous elements, the remediation crew will use special techniques to salvage what they can. You can also search for other specialized cleaners for company heirloom pieces.
While cross-contamination is a concern during the mold cleanup process for many business owners, the use of remediation professionals drastically reduces any cause for concern. If you have a mold problem, contact a local remediation specialist for an assessment.

2 Reasons To Choose an IICRC Certified Business

3/25/2021 (Permalink)

White brick wall with the words WHAT IS THE IICRC The IICRC is a nonprofit that works in the restoration industry.

Two Reasons To Choose A Business That This Organization Endorses

When you're hiring a disaster remediation company in Pomona, CA, you want technicians that are professionally trained. This can seem like a challenging task at times. The best way to know that you are getting a qualified business in this industry is to look for a certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Here are two reasons to choose a business that this organization endorses.

1. What Are These Certifications?
The IICRC is a nonprofit that works in the restoration industry. It is a leading body that establishes the standards and standardized training for companies and technicians performing restoration work. It offers several certifications, from a carpet cleaning master to a mitigation certificate. Professionals can pursue multiple certifications in the same area and become a master in that specialty. Each year technicians and masters are expected to perform continuing education courses.
A certified firm can have all of its technicians be certified, or only one. You can identify one of these firms because they will likely display this organization's logo and other marketing materials. The best businesses are the ones that make all of their technicians maintain their certifications. Additionally, a firm with at least one master in a specialty will provide higher quality work. These minimum requirements ensure that you get a firm that is properly certified to handle your disaster.

2. What are the Industry Standards?
The standards are the best and most current technologies and techniques used by industry professionals to remediate a disaster. They include the procedures from handling everything from basic carpet cleaning and installation to extreme water damage restoration. These are based on scientific facts and years of experience and focus on improving the efficiency, safety, and effectiveness of professionals working in the industry.
Businesses should look for firms with IICRC certified technicians. These credentials ensure that a company and its employees meet industry standards. In other words, you can count on a certified company to help remedy your disaster.

5 Ways To Protect Your Business From Flood Damage

3/24/2021 (Permalink)

Sandbag pile protection from flood or enemy fire. Keep a supply of sandbags or flood-protective material on hand.

Five Ways To Take Action

Commercial owners in Cal Poly University-Pomona, CA, do not have the ability to stop Mother Nature's rising waters; however, proprietors do have the authority to fight off flood damage. By taking time to evaluate the property, it's possible to minimize harm. The following are five ways to take action now.

1. Raise the Electrical Outlets
When inclement weather occurs, moisture could infiltrate the building from the roof and through the floor. This storm damage exposes electrical wiring to fluid. To avoid this contamination and the cost of fixing an entire electrical system, consider relocating outlets and major wiring systems to a higher location. Floods can rise use to several feet. Place these openings further up, at least 12 inches above the base flood elevation zone.

2. Invest in Barrier Protection
The incoming water is hard to fight off unless the perimeter has been protected with a watertight product. Keep a supply of sandbags or flood-protective material on hand. Line these around the weaker areas, especially doors and windows. Ensure they are at least 3 feet or more depending on the establishment's placement in the flood zone.

3. Safeguard the HVAC Unit
A ruined HVAC unit is expensive to replace, and it's one of the objects likely to incur flood damage if it sits on the ground at a low level. Move it to the roof or a higher floor.

4. Enhance Landscaping
Ward off flooding by planting flowers and shrubs along the business's perimeter. Use local greenery that thrives in the area's soil. The roots assist in maintaining appropriate soil levels and easing drainage issues.

5. Have a Generator
The sooner a water and flood restoration company begins cleanup efforts, the better. A generator allows for workers to get into the place faster and begin drying out the soaked material.
Owners have the power to minimize flood damage, but it requires forward-thinking and proactive approaches. Be open to changing devices' locations and consider methods to secure the area from water infiltration. Doing these things could save time, stress and money.

Restoration Process

After a storm has caused flooding in your Pomona, CA, home it may be time to contact a local water damage restoration service. These professionals can deal with a variety of storm damage types and flood water is one of the more common. Here are a few things you may see the restoration team do while they restore your home.

1. Water Removal

One of the first steps to restoration is to thoroughly remove any remaining water before contamination can occur. Flood water has a chance of carrying bacteria which could prove hazardous, so after the water is removed the area will be thoroughly dried and cleaned with sanitizing solutions as well.

2. Flood Cut

One of the dangers of flooding is that if enough of it occurs it can seep into the drywall and lead to mold damage, or problems with bacteria. One of the ways to prevent this is for a flood cut or tear out to be performed. This is the process of cutting the wall about a foot above the damage line and replacing it with new drywall. This is done to help protect the home from the aforementioned type of damages.

3. Rebuilding

After any major repairs, like a flood cut, are done the team working on your home can begin restoring it to pre-storm conditions. This can mean replacing flooring, patching flood-cut seams, repainting, and fixing any other damages that may have occurred. After these repairs are complete your home should look like it did before the storm occur.

After a storm causes flooding, it’s a good idea to contact a restoration team. These professionals can remove the water and dry the area before beginning the necessary repairs. They will even be able to take care of a flood cut n order to prevent long-term problems. Rest assured that with a little time and work they can have your home looking “Like it never even happened.”

Why You Should Not Drive on Flooded Streets

3/24/2021 (Permalink)

car rides in heavy rain on a flooded road Never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn around, don’t drown.

A flooded street poses many dangers to drivers, passengers, and personal property. Flooding can happen quickly and unexpectedly. If your neighborhood in Diamond Bar, CA, experiences a flood, it is important to follow some precautions to stay safe. By knowing the dangers you are likely to encounter when streets are flooded, you can lower your risk of being caught off guard.

What Could Go Wrong

You cannot maintain control of your vehicle on flooded roads. As little as twelve inches of water can be enough to carry away a small car. If you do not have traction with the ground, your vehicle can be washed away or flipped on its side. Streets with certain characteristics are more likely to flood:

  • At the bottom of hills
  • Underneath overpasses
  • Where good city drainage is not properly installed
  • Near rivers, streams, or bodies of water
  • Where the road dips or is lower than the ground around it

What To Do Instead
If you are traveling familiar routes, think ahead to determine the likelihood of encountering flooded roads. You can also check local news and apps for travel tips to help keep you safe. If you determine the route to be unsafe, try to plan a different way to your destination. If there is no safe way, or you encounter a flooded street along the way, do not drive into the water. If you find yourself in flooded water despite your best intentions, you should leave your car if the water is calm and still. If there is a current in the water, you are advised to remain in your vehicle and call for help. It only takes six inches of fast-moving water to sweep a person off the ground.
You can minimize the likelihood of harm to yourself and your vehicle by not going near a flooded street. However, if your home or auto sustains damage, a professional water restoration service can help get your belongings back to normal as quickly as possible.

Answers to Common Questions About Smoke Alarms

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

smoke detector with white smoke and red warning light You should keep one smoke alarm in every bedroom and on each floor of your Diamond Bar, CA, home.

Common Questions About Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are invaluable parts of any household. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 60 percent of home fire deaths occur in properties without a working smoke alarm. Here are answers to common questions about smoke detectors.

1. How Many Detectors Do You Need?
Fires can be particularly dangerous at night when everyone in the home is asleep. To make sure each member of the household hears the alarm, one should be placed inside every bedroom and outside of every sleeping area. At least one smoke detector should also be put on each level of your home, including the attic and basement. You may want to install additional detectors if your house is particularly large.

2. How Often Should You Test and Replace the Alarm?
Malfunctioning smoke detectors are essentially useless. You should thus test every smoke alarm at least once a month. Just push the test button on the detector and make sure the device beeps.
Most smoke detectors last approximately 10 years. Check the manufacturer date on the back of each alarm to find out when you need to replace it.

3. What Do You Do When the Alarm Sounds?
If you hear the detector beeping, get out of the house as soon as possible. Everyone in your family should get to a safe meeting place outside the premises. Once you are there, use your cell or a neighbor's phone to dial 911. You may also want to contact fire cleanup specialists who can restore your home and remove any lingering odors.
Ideally, you should keep one smoke alarm in every bedroom and on each floor of your Diamond Bar, CA, home. Each of these detectors should be tested regularly to ensure they are functioning properly. The alarms should be completely replaced every 10 years. This should keep your family safe and prevent severe fire damage to your property.

The Features of a Fire Escape Plan for a Business

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

Evacuation plan - first floor It is prudent to put together a fire escape plan.

Most people or businesses do not expect a fire to happen, but everyday fires break out in all kinds of companies. It is prudent to put together a fire escape plan. This will protect the lives of your employees and customers and it could also limit damages. The Red Cross puts out many resources to help people cope during an emergency. The organization offers the following advice immediately after a fire strikes:

  • Give first aid where needed such as putting cold water on minor burns; call for emergency help for larger issues
  • Let friends, family and coworkers know you are safe
  • Help people and animals that need special assistance due to age or disability
  • Stay away from damaged buildings

The Basics of a Fire Escape Plan

An emergency escape plan consists of two major components: know where to go and know what to do. Company leaders should make sure everyone knows where to head in the case of a fire. This will likely be a meeting place outside your building in Cal Poly University-Pomona, CA. Leaders should also map out the safest route. A plan also includes a number of smart actions to take. If there is time, someone should call the fire department as soon as possible, or activate an alarm. Yelling fire could alert people who are yet unaware of the fire. People should leave personal items behind, use stairs instead of elevators and stay away from doors that have handles hot to the touch. If you must go through smoke, stay low and close doors behind you.

The Procedures After a Fire

Once the fire escape plan has proven successful, a fire damage mitigation team should be called in immediately. Highly-trained technicians will inspect the property, assess the damage and map out a recovery plan. This will include removing soot and smoke damage and eliminating odors. The ultimate goal is to return the building "Like it never even happened."

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher During a Fire

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers isolated on white background. Various types of extinguishers. 3d illustration. There are different types of fire extinguishers.

Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher correctly can be the difference between life or death during a home fire. When used properly and promptly, they can stop a fire dead in its tracks, giving the fire department time to arrive.
But there is a technique to do it right. It’s called P.A.S.S., and it’s what the experts recommend for putting out fires.

4 Types of Extinguishers

Each fire extinguisher will be labeled with a specific class:

Class A, for solid combustible fires.
Class B, for flammable liquid fires.
Class C, for electrical fires.
Class K, for kitchen fires.

Most residential fire extinguishers will be a combination: ABC. This is an excellent all-around extinguisher that covers all the bases. Using a single-class type is ok if you’re experienced with it, but you’ll be fine with an ABC in most homes – or even better, two of them.

Safety First!
Before you consider using an extinguisher on a fire, you need to make sure you’re safe. If there’s even the slightest doubt of your safety while fighting the fire, leave immediately and let the professionals handle it. An event called a flashover can happen in seconds, and if you’re inside when it does, you’re not likely to survive. If the flames are even slightly brushing the roof, get out!
Once everyone is safe, call the fire department. Then you can consider fighting the fire yourself if it’s isolated and the smoke isn’t dangerous.

P.A.S.S the Test
P.A.S.S stands for pull, aim, squeeze and sweep. Grab the fire extinguisher and pull the safety pin. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle gently at first until you have a sense of the flow - -then give it a full blast. Sweep the stream from side to side.
Done right, you can save your home a great deal of fire damage. However, safety should always be in your mind; if the fire is growing, go ahead and leave it. Once the fire is out, call a top fire cleanup company in your area to get the restoration process started immediately.

5 Things You Need To Know About Mold

2/16/2021 (Permalink)

Here Are Five Things You Need To Know About Mold

Mold is the boogeyman of real estate. When you bought the property for your company in Pomona, CA, you were warned repeatedly about the impact that mold growth could have on your business. Mold exists everywhere in the atmosphere and is always ready to settle in and grow where the conditions are right. Here are five things you need to know about mold.

1. Growing Conditions
Mold grows where it's wet and warm. Basements other high humidity areas are the most susceptible. Mold likes to grow on porous surfaces — wood, carpet, and ceiling tiles — but it's not picky. Mold will also grow almost anywhere.

2. Leaks and Floods
If you have a leak or a flood, mold can begin growing within 24-48 hours. Water damage to your business might be your first concern, but secondary damage from mold can quickly get out of control.

3. Signs of Mold
Often, one of the first indicators of mold growth is a musty smell. The smell isn't actually caused by the mold itself; it's caused by the gases that mold releases as it grows. Mold comes in a variety of colors, so if you notice discoloration of a ceiling tile or the wall behind a toilet, don't ignore it.

4. Mold Prevention
The main thing is to keep everything clean and dry. Run a dehumidifier or a fan in high humidity areas. Clean up quickly after spills and address maintenance requests for leaks quickly. Keep dust to a minimum and be careful with potted plants over carpet.

5. Remediation
If you do discover mold, it's best to trust a commercial mold specialist to evaluate and solve the issue. Even if it seems like the problem is small, mold could be growing behind walls or under flooring. A professional will be able to assess that and guide you through remediation.
Dealing with mold growth at your business isn't something anyone wants to think about. However, since it could result in a high bill and loss of productivity, knowing the signs and responding quickly will help to keep your business running smoothly.

How to Handle Electronics After Water Damage

2/16/2021 (Permalink)

Above view of laptop with water drop damage liquid wet and spill on keyboard, accident concept If your electronics have been damaged by water you need to take care of them as soon as possible.

Taking The Following Steps Can Help Salvage Them

Whether it is the result of a storm in Diamond Bar, CA, faulty plumbing or broken appliances, water damage in your commercial building can come with a few additional problems. One of these is flooded electronics. These items likely play an important role in your business and can be pricey to replace. Taking the following steps can help salvage them.

1. Turn Off and Unplug Your Electronics
The first thing that you should do when dealing with flooded electronics is to make sure they are off and unplugged. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination, so before attempting this, turn off the power to your building. Be careful of any items that are powered with batteries as these may pose additional risks.

2. Drain and Dry Affected Devices
The longer the water is present in these devices, the more likely there will be damage like rust and corrosion. Remove any electronics from the area and drain as much water from them as you can. You may need to take some items apart, if you are able, to ensure the water has been completely removed. Do not attempt to turn on any items until they are thoroughly dry. This can be unsafe and can also result in permanent electronic damage.

3. Have Items Cleaned and Repaired by a Professional
When in doubt, have these tasks performed by a professional. A cleanup and restoration service will often make repairs to damaged belongings as well as your building. These professionals have the training and experience necessary to ensure your electronics are working properly and are safe to use again.
Because water can cause a lot of damage to your devices, it is important to have any flooded electronics taken care of as soon as possible. Drying them quickly can reduce the likelihood of permanent damage. A professional service is your best bet if you want to salvage water-damaged items.

Molds are a fungus that can make your home look unsightly and cause other issues. It can grow in humid and moist areas in your house such as the basement, kitchen, bathroom, etc. Check out these tips on how to avoid these fungi from growing in your home.

Keep Humidity Levels Low

A humid environment is the source of mild growth which is why proper ventilation is your best weapon against these fungi. Installation of vent fans in the bathroom, basement, and kitchen is a big help in preventing molds. Dehumidifiers are also an excellent option.

Dry Wet Areas Immediately

The bathroom and kitchen are the common areas of mold growth due to the frequent presence of moisture. Dry these areas immediately after using them. It’s also important to check out enclosed spaces and leaky pipes as these can be sources of mold growth as well.

Add Indoor Plants to Your Home

Indoor plants help reduce moisture and reduce carbon dioxide in your home. They can also vastly improve the indoor air quality of your home!

Restoring Your Home After a Storm Flood

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

Despite preparing and fortifying your home, it’s still possible that your property will be damaged after a massive storm flood. It’s devastating to see your house obliterated after a storm flood. Here are the top tips when restoring your precious house property after it was damaged by a storm flood.

Contact your insurance provider

Processing an insurance claim can take some time so you need to call your insurance company as soon as possible after the storm flood ran its course.

Hiring a cleaning company

The next thing you need to do is to contact a cleaning company to pump out the water and remove debris. Also, keep in mind that the floods might have carried sewage wastes into your home. This is why you shouldn’t enter the property after a storm flood and let the cleaning company clean and sanitize your home first.

Hiring a restoration contractor

The next step is to get help from a restoration contractor. Get a quote from multiple contractors and determine which ones provide the best value.

Common Causes of Leaky Pipes

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

white plumbing pipes Pipe inspection is crucial in preventing leaks

A leaky pipe can cause many issues for your home. Not only will the wastewater increase your water utility bill, but it will also encourage mold growth. As always, preventing these types of problems is better. With that, here are the common causes of leaky pipes and how to prevent them.

Damaged or Aging seals

Some of your properties might have plumbing connections that are applied with a rubber sealant on pipe connections. As time goes by, the seals will eventually degrade and can’t support the connections anymore. If ever there is condensation or small water puddles near your appliances, then it’s most likely that the seals are broken.

Corrosion of pipes

Pipe corrosion is very prevalent in old homes since the plumbing system is rusty. If your house is old, have a plumber conduct a thorough inspection of the plumbing system. Ask if there are any upgrades that need to be done.

Even if your house isn’t 50 years old, you may still need to have it checked since some pipe materials need maintenance.

High water pressure

Extreme pressure can stress and damage pipes, and this will eventually cause leaks. Have a plumber check the water pressure and conduct the necessary adjustments to prevent high water pressure.

How to Minimize or Prevent Floods on Your Property

8/14/2020 (Permalink)

Floods can cause a lot of damage to your property if you don’t prepare. Some of you might live in a low-risk flood area and think that floods are nothing to worry about. However, some storms can bring heavy rains that can flood low-risk locations easily. With that said, here are some tips on how to minimize or prevent floods from ruining your property.

Acquire Flood Insurance

You may have standard insurance for your property but some of them don’t cover flood damages. This is why you should secure flood insurance that covers a good deal of the contents of your property.

Install a Sewage Water Backstop in Your Basement

Basements are one of the areas in a property that’s most prone to flooding. If your basement gets filled with water during light or heavy rains, you should try setting up a sewage water backstop or a backflow prevention valve. This is very useful in preventing filled sewer mains from overflowing your basement. A licensed plumber should be able to install this device with ease.

Modify Your Landscape

Your landscape can be a contributing factor to how severe the flood will be on your property. Creating channels that stream the floodwater out of your property can make a big difference. It’s best to consult a landscaping solutions enterprise to get the best advice.
